Karot Hydropower Project is being developed by Karot Power Company Private Limited (KPCL) on Jhelum River. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of Karot Hydropower Project, conducted in 2009 by SMEC, was approved by relevant Environmental Protection Agencies (EPAs) i.e EPA – Punjab and EPA - AJK in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
Due to certain design amendments, an update of the EIA 2009 was carried out by Pakistan Engineering Services (Pvt) Limited (PES) in January 2015.The updated PES ESIA documents 2015 were submitted to relevant Environmental Protection Agencies (EPAs) in February 2015 for their approval for which both EPAs conducted Public Hearings on April 10th, 2015 in Karot Village and April 14th, 2015 in Hollar Village. Accordingly, EPA – Punjab has accorded the approval in July 14, 2015 whereas approval from EPA –AJK is awaited.
As the project is being financed by IFC, the PES ESIA report was reviewed by IFC and found that additional resources are required to bring the ESIA up to the standard to meet the IFC requirements. Consequently, KPCL engaged an international consultancy firm, Mott MacDonald, to complete the assignment fulfilling all the national and international requirements. The following ESIA documents are publically available; all Stakeholders and interested parties can review these documents: The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (the “International ESIA”) disclosed at the website mentioned above is comprised of seven volumes:
Volume I: Non-technical Summary (NTS) of the international ESIA report

Volume III: Technical Appendices/Supporting Documents
Volume IV: Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP)
Volume V: NTS of the Resettlement Action Plan
